Snow Days and Comfort Food

This morning I woke to pouring rain, the same sound I heard throughout the night...which is odd in Colorado because we really don't get much rain. The April showers that bring May flowers to other states come in the form of snow for us. Which is what is (and has been) falling now. So I woke with hearty foods on my mind. In this case I guess "hearty" is synonomous with "diet buster".

First off was the McDonald's breakfast I went to bed craving last night. Why did a sausage-egg-McMuffin sound so incredibly good last night? So good that the craving carried over into the morning. It's as though the cold, dampness of the morning triggered something in my mind (and stomach) that made anything ladened in grease so appetizing. I simply had to have it, all of it!

It was decided that Nas and I would stay inside all day so that meant footed pajamas for him and elastic waist pants and a t-shirt for me...I was so chilly I even slipped into a pair of my warmest, snuggly socks. Ah, snow day. Typically I am able to ward off the cravings, but today I became submissive to the fast food breakfast and chocolate chip cookie demons that haunted me.

Why do comfort foods become a staple when it's cold and dreary outside? And it's fruit salad and grilled chicken breasts in the summer? Whatever the reason it explains that extra few pounds I pack on year after year when cold sets in. I'm even on a weight-loss, healthy lifestyle plan and lost 4 pounds last week...I guess the weather's going to have to let up or at least half of those pounds will find their way back to my hips (and thighs and waist and butt) by this week's end. I am decidely okay with that, warm weather is right around the corner afterall! Isn't it?
