They Like it...They Really Like It!

In my old(er) age I have taken to cooking. I started with baking, which I do enjoy but until I figure out this high altitude bit, I’ll leave that to those much more experienced than I. But as of late, cookbooks have become a favorite. And if you know me, you know good and well that I stay as far from a hot stove as I can, or at least I used to. Cooking always looked like too much work to me, you put in all of that effort only to find you didn’t season it enough or the salt you added is far too overpowering. But now I realize cooking is one thing I can do my way, with the guidance of Devin Alexander, G. Garvin and the lovely cooks at Allrecipes.com, and I enjoy the time it takes.

It was totally unexpected that I would find cooking, of all things, to be an art of solace for me, but what was even more unexpected was that my babies would actually like the food I cook for them. That…that was shocking. I prefer to prepare meals at home, whenever I can, to avoid all of the additives and preservatives in packaged foods so I was leery when I had my meal all set to place in front of my little critics. Sometimes Nas is less than thrilled but will at least try it, and my Jay? Oh Jay is a diner after my heart. She will eat virtually anything I serve her.

“Did you like your dinner?” I ask reluctantly with muscles tightened in anticipation.
“Yeah mom, it was good!” Jay answers genuinely.
“Nas, did you like it?” I ask, not as reluctantly. Nas shovels his food in in record time so he can get back to his toys as quickly as possible. What kind of food critic is that?
“Ooh mommy, that was dee-licious!” Nas responds and my heart smiles.

I really do believe God knows just what type of kid to give each mom. He knew I wouldn’t get my cooking game started until my kids were a bit older so their taste buds are much less refined than, say, Rachael Ray’s kids’ buds will be. But they will know the difference between mommy’s novice fare and the new and improved flavors I create….in due time.

Got a great recipe that a novice in the kitchen could handle? Email it to me, I’ll let you know how it turns out for me!!
