Before giving birth a lot of moms have a baby shower where, hopefully, she receives cute outfits, soft blankies, baby wash and a ton of diapers. Diapers in all sizes: a pack or two of newborns, a bunch of 1s, and a few 2s should line the floor of her baby-to-be's nursery. Diapers are serious business when baby joins the household.
As Nas approached his second birthday I started to stress about potty training him. Allegedly I was potty trained around age one, which explains a LOT. But I knew that once October 30, 2006 rolled around, I'd be hounded (especially by my darling mother) about what I was doing to get him trained. In the other ear Nas' pediatrician imparts "boy" wisdom: it's okay if he isn't potty trained until he's 3, even 4 years old. Boys are a bit slower than girls.
Screeeeeeech. Oh but no. Uh-uh, no way, no how, uh-uh. My son was not permitted to be in diapers past October 30, 2007 and he surely was not going to toddle around in a sopping wet diaper at four. It just wasn't for me, it wasn't okay with me and developmentally I felt Nas was very much capable of going to the potty.
Sooooo. We started training right around his second birthday and Nas would not bite. He seemed to think it odd to place his bottom on a plastic seat. Maybe it was cold? So off I went to buy one of the toilet seat inserts hoping he'd "warm up" to that. He did, but he was so small there was no way he could be comfortable on the toilet without a lot of help.
"Maybe he's not ready," Babe would suggest. Oh no, he's ready, I'm under the gun here!, I'd think.
Realizing he wasn't ready, we backed off. But gradually we'd see more signs of readiness so we'd try again. Pull-Ups, that had to be the answer. So for a couple of months all we bought were Pull-Ups with Spiderman and Cars characters on them. We threatened Nas with diapers when he soaked his Pull-Up day after day after day.
Then one day I decided I was sick of buying Pull-Ups because they were too much like diapers to a 2-year-old, so I put him in cloth underwear. It worked like a charm. He loves cloth underwear and after an accident or two he's doing really well. And he's three months shy of his third birthday!!
We are so proud of our little boy that our bribes of Transformers, cars, and a Go Diego Go tricycle seem like peanuts. And we're only buying Pull-Ups for nighttime until we move into nighttime training. Now we buy Spidey and Cars underwear, no more diapers for our Nas!

ohh! My daughter (Oct 17, 2004 birthday) JUST this weekend got in panties full time. I really thought it'd be closer to her birthday but I went and showed her the three year old preschool and said, "You can't go until you're in panties!" and two days later she did it. We're doing pullups at night, too. THAT could really take a while. ;-)
Yay, Nas!! Underwear is what worked for us too. I just don't get Pull-ups. Both of my children used them just as they would a regular diaper. Congrats to Nas on the success!
