What's keeping me from blogging these days? I vowed to write daily, DAILY, many a time before but it always seems to be derailed by something.
"I'm too tired, uninspired, busy, tired..."
Those excuses are lame in just about any situation, but this time I have a really good reason for not sitting my buns down to crank out some verbage. I, MrsB, have been....as Nas would say, "Wait for it..." READING!!
Not that I'm illiterate or anything, but before recently I'd lost interest in taking time for myself to just enjoy a good book. When I was younger I appreciated the way a good writer could take me from being "me" in "my" life into a wonderful world unlike mine. That appreciation has manifested itself once again and I can't get enough time to read!
As of late I'm enjoying, thoroughly, "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd. Why do I love this book, I mean truly, unabashedly LOVE? The writing is unlike most I've ever read or paid attention to, at least. Today I was reading and came across a simple, but incredible description of a forest area after a rain storm. "The rain-cleaned woods" was how Kidd described it. I could almost smell rain and the wet tree leaves seemed to appear before me. Wow. I'd love that.
The other treat keeping away from my blog would be "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert. I've mentioned this book before in a June entry, but this book truly is like enjoying your favorite dessert, on your best vacation, with the very best of company. Even if that company is just YOU. Wow. EPL is a journalism student's ecstasy.
With EPL I went into it expecting some old mumbo-jumbo, in part because Oprah raved about it. Oprah's got her place, but sometimes I think she just "love, love, loves" everything and that isn't how I feel about a lot of the novels she recommends. When my sister decided we should read it together I picked it up at Walmart and hoped to at least see a true journalist's approach to writing a book without being a "reporter". This chick took that challenge and made it look like child's play. Sure, it's a memoir, but her personal experiences married with her skill make this book serious chocolate cake at the height of any girl's PMS. Yeah, it's that good.
So there you have it. I haven't been writing quite as much, I've been reading like an inmate. And I LOVE it! Have you ever been afraid to finish a book you're enjoying because there may not be anything else that decadent in print? That's me. It's the tastiest thing I've done for myself in a long time!
